Picking & Grinning (treasure hunting the Kansas scene)
by LARRY WINKLER on 03/31/12Yesterday we did indeed find some interesting vintage treasures. Our trip yesterday took us to Wamego garage sales, then down highway K99 to Eskridge, Ks where we played the part of 'pickers' & spent some time searching thru an old barn. There we picked up 2 old 7-up signs, a couple of old wooden cabinets, several small items including old bottles, porcelain enamel bucket, etc. Then we had lunch at the Coffee Cup Cafe in Eskridge, followed highway K4 thru Dover, Ks where we were enticed to stop for pie & iced tea at the Summetset Hall cafe. Then on to Topeka where we visited several garage sales & estate sales & were able to purchase some interesting items such as glassware, old toy car, some old wooden stockracks (you farm kids will know what I mean), & more. Our last purchase was a Craigslist find, an old wooden 4 nest chicken roost which had been nicely cleaned up & varnished. Our last stops included dinner at El Mescal and then dessert at Baskin-Robbins with Sue & Fred Guzek. By then we were a couple of tired old campers. Home to Wamego to chill out & prepare for a another profitable day at Aunt Peg's Antiques in Paxico. Come see us. Complementary Rice Krispy treats today! Later today I will post some photos of our latest finds.
Exciting store changes
by LARRY WINKLER on 03/28/12Peg & I are planning some exciting changes to the store format. As you may know, our store is actually located in 2 historic old downtown buildings standing side by side. They are connected by a common doorway. Our plans include transitioning one of the buildings from an "mall" look. We will be losing one of our major in-store dealers in late spring so we have decided that this will be an opportunity to re-style a portion of our store. In general, plans include the inclusion of more furniture, artwork, and decorative pieces. If I could accurately describe the idea behind the changes, it would be a move from 'collectible' and 'collecting' items, to more emphasis on home (or office) decorating. Part of the reasoning for this is our sense that as younger people enter the market, they will be searching not so much for items to 'collect and display' but for decorating ideas to enhance their homes & workplaces. Of course we still intend to offer 'collectible' items and plan to retain space for 'mall' type displays and inventory.
Paxico, Kansas
by LARRY WINKLER on 03/23/12Peggy is current President of the Paxico Merchants Association, and I am the Sec/Treasurer. So we are actively involved with operation and promotion of the Paxico business community. We are excited about the future of the community. Several new businesses and attractions have recently opened (or) are scheduled to open in the very near future. Some of these include: an art gallery/book store, museum/antique store, feed store, and upholstery shop/antique store. Although our town currently lacks a restaurant, our Association is recruiting for a restauranteur. We are also planning to find one or more food vendors who are willing to set up food carts to sell on weekends. There are 3 restaurants and a couple more antique stores in nearbly Alma, Ks which is a mere 10 minutes away. Paxico already offers a wonderful RV/Campground, city park, churches, and schools. And of course we offer the best antique & collectible experience. 6 shops currently occupy our historic downtown all within easy walking distance. Come see us!!!
Our customers shopping experience
by LARRY WINKLER on 03/23/12In our Paxico store we offer a guest registry for our customers to sign & leave comments. We have been very pleased that those choosing to register have left many positive comments about our store. Comments include: 'excellent store', great store', 'very friendly store', 'very neat store'. We are pleased that our visitors enjoy their shopping experience. Since our building is a renovated old small town retail shop of limestone construction with classic high tin ceilings and old victorian wooden storefront and rustic tin front overhang, the combination of our vintage inventory and the building atmosphere illicit many questions and favorable comments. We pride ourselves on being the friendliest storekeepers in town. Our dealers do a commendable job of maintaining neat and accessible inventories. Stop in & see us sometime. We will be glad to visit with you & try to make your stay with us as enjoyable as possible.
